Quranic Syntax: Possessive Structures of the Quran Part 1

Quranic Syntax: Possessive Structures of the Quran

Complex Arabic grammatical rules sometimes distract learners from the Quran. So, it is better to give them some easy syntactic combinations like the possessive structures. Now it is possible to extract all the possessive combinations through corpus database.

In the sample table below, I have extracted some possessive Noun+Noun combinations from the Quran. There are other possibilities like N+DET+N combinations that I will deal with in another post.

Making a comprehensive list of possessive structures of the whole Quran needs a lot of time, patience and manual assistance.

Technical Title of this post: Examples of Mudaaf and Mudaaf Ilaih from the Quran

Quranic Syntax: The Noun-Adjective Combinations 3

Quranic Syntax: The Noun-Adjective Combinations 3

Also Read: Quranic Syntax: The Noun-Adjective Combinations 1

The morphological data analysis of the Quran shows 3 types of Noun-Adjective patterns in general. The Third Noun-Adjective Combination is
{(Possessive) N-Pron} +( Det + Adj).
A well-known example can be found in the verse (7:16)

قَالَ فَبِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَاطَكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ

[Satan] said, "Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path

In Quranic Arabic, possessive combination achieves the status of definiteness, so it is followed by a definite adjective. Grammatical Case reference (NOMinative, ACCusative and GENitive) is given here for advanced learners.

(My heart-felt gratitude goes to Tom-S, Excel MVP, for his kind and quick help in Excel pattern analysis 3.)
