Quranic Verb Conjugation

Verb Root 2

The 2nd most frequently used Verb Root is (kaaf-waw-noon) ك - و - ن
As word root, it occurs 1390 times, 1358 times as verb roots.
كان
V (past) He / it is / was

يكون
V (pre-fu) He / it will be

كُنْ
Imperative: Be, Become

كُونِي
Imperative: Be, Become (used for Feminine Gender), Occurs only once in the Quran in Sura Ambia Verse 69 قُلْنَا يَا نَارُ كُونِي بَرْدًا وَسَلَامًا عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ﴿الأنبياء: ٦٩﴾
Allah said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham."

كُونُوا
Imperative: (you all) Be, Become
قُلْ كُونُوا حِجَارَةً أَوْ حَدِيدًا ﴿الإسراء: ٥٠﴾
Say, "Be you stones or iron

لَا تَكُونُوا
Prohibition: (you all) Don't Be, Become
وَلَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ قَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَهُمْ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ ﴿الأنفال: ٢١﴾
And do not be like those who say, "We have heard," while they do not hear.

Interesting: One interesting point regarding this verb is that when the emphatic past negative Lam لَمْ precedes it, it almost loses its existence except the initial Kaaf. Look at these examples
قَالَتْ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِي غُلَامٌ وَلَمْ يَمْسَسْنِي بَشَرٌ وَلَمْ أَكُ بَغِيًّا ﴿مريم: ٢٠﴾
She said, "How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?"

قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ قَالَ رَبُّكَ هُوَ عَلَيَّ هَيِّنٌ وَقَدْ خَلَقْتُكَ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَمْ تَكُ شَيْئًا ﴿مريم: ٩﴾
[An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.' "
