The Quickest Way to the Quran, Lesson: 1.3 Other Forms of Personal Pronouns

 In Lesson 1, we have learnt the personal pronouns that are used as subjects. But when they are used as objects and possessives, they take different forms. Look at the following table:
Personal Pronoun Table
From the table, it is clear that some of the forms (SL 2,3,5,6) are the same in subjective, objective & possessive forms.

3 Person Masculine Singular ه
Huwa when used as object changes to hu and when used as possessive changes to hu/hi depending on the preceding vowel.
Example
مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ ﴿عبس: ١٨﴾
From what stuff hath He created him? (80:18)

He created him. Here (hu=him) is used as object of the verb created خَلَقَ

Example as possessive
فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ ﴿الإنشقاق: ٧﴾
Then he who is given his Record in his right hand (84:7)

1. If the possessive hu comes after [a] and [u] vowel sound, it retains its original hu form, but 2. if any [i] sounds precedes it, it takes hi form as it is clear in 1. كِتَابَهُ 2. and بِيَمِينِهِ

كُلٌّ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ
Each one (of them) believeth in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers. (2:284)

As Object of Prepositions
Personal pronouns can be used as object of preposition. For example
لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ
To Him belongs what is in the heavens and on earth, (20:6)

وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ ﴿يونس: ٥٦﴾
and to Him shall ye all be brought back.(10:56)

After [y] sound hu changes to hi except the following verse
وَمَنْ أَوْفَىٰ بِمَا عَاهَدَ عَلَيْهُ اللَّهَ فَسَيُؤْتِيهِ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا ﴿الفتح: ١٠﴾
....and any one who fulfils what he has covenanted with Allah,- Allah will soon grant him a great Reward. (48:10)

The 3rd Person Masculine Singular hu/hi occurs as many as 3372 times in the Quran including the pronoun اياه iyyahu which occurs 8 times

The Quickest Way to the Quran: Lesson 1

There are 77430 words in the Quran, but it is said that the Quran has around 2000 (TWO THOUSAND) unique (unrepeated) words.

Encouraged by "80% Words of the Quran" and "Quranic Arabic Corpus", I am trying to categorize those words in a way easily comprehensible to non-Native learners of Arabic.

I think this is the quickest way to understanding Quran, because you need not try to understand Quran word by word……What you need is to group the basic vocabulary with simple examples.

Today's lesson deals with Personal pronouns.

In Quranic Arabic, the third and second person each is divided into Masculine and Feminine. Each masculine and Feminine is divided into Singular, Dual and Plural. The First Person is divided only into two – Singular and plural So we have total 14 Forms of Personal Pronoun (3rd P=6, 2nd P=6, 1st P=2)

The 3rd Person Dual forms are the same for Masculine and Feminine and occur 159 times in the Quran

The Third Person Masculine Plural as separate & joined occurs occur 3897 times according to Quranic corpus, but Zekr Quran Project traces 3896 occurrences.
Example:
وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
And it is they who are the successful (Sura Baqarah 2:5)
. وَلَهُمْ فِيهَا أَزْوَاجٌ مُطَهَّرَةٌ وَهُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ
….. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally. (Sura Baqarah 2:25)

In most of the verses, هِيَ refers to objects, animals and matters that are considered feminine and translated as 'it / that' except in verse Sura Yusuf 12:26
